Major Project Work aims at developing innovative skills in the students whereby they apply in totality the knowledge and skills gained through the course work in the solution of a particular problem or by undertaking a project. In addition, the project work is intended to place students for project-oriented practical training in an actual work situation for the stipulated period.
WHAT DO WE LEARN WITH MAJOR PROJECTS?
After undergoing the Major project work in the final year, students will be able to:
Apply incompleteness to the knowledge and skills achieved through the course work in the solution of a respective problem or by undertaking a project. In addition, the project work is planned to place the learner for project-oriented practical training in an actual site work situation for the prescribed period with a view to
- Developing an understanding of subject book based knowledge given in the classroom in the context of its application at actual workplaces.
- Develop understanding regarding the dimensions and scale of operations and nature of field-work in which students are going to recreate their role after finalising the courses of study.
- Develop first-hand understanding and confidence amongst the students to allow them to use and apply book base knowledge and skills to solve practical problems related to the world of work on the actual working ground.
- Develop abilities like interpersonal skills, communication skills, positive attitudes, Problem-solving skills, Report Writing Skills and values etc.
HOW TO SELECT A MAJOR PROJECT TOPIC IN CIVIL ENGINEERING?
The topic selection is based on the individual students having different aptitudes and strengths. Students should be assigned a problem of interest to him/her as a major project work. It is also important that the faculty of the respective department may have a brainstorming session to pinpoint suitable project assignments for their students.
Major Project work, therefore, should match the ability of students. For this objective, students should be requested to identify the type of project work, they would like to perform. The action of problem identification should begin well in advance (say at the end of the second year of the course for Diploma and third year for B.tech Students).
The project task can be an individual assignment or a group assignment. There should not be more than 3 to 5 students if the project work is given to a group. The project work identified in teamwork with the industry should be preferred.
This practical training cum project task work should not be thought of as just conventional industrial training in which students are sent to actual site work with either minimal or no supervision. This experience is required to be planned in advance and supervised on a periodic basis by the polytechnic faculty. For the fulfilment of the above purposes, polytechnics may establish consolidated linkage with 8-10 relevant organizations for providing such an experience to students. It is essential that each organization is visited sufficiently in advance and activities to be performed by students are well defined. The chosen activities should be such that it matches with the curricular good to students and of professional importance to industrial/ field organizations. Each teacher is expected to observe and guide 5-6 students or a minimum of 2 groups.
